Stress may be causing your digestive distress!
The mission of a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner is to determine the root cause of a symptom. "Why?" is one of my favorite questions.
One of the most common complaints I hear is digestive related. Cramping, bloating, stomach pain, gallbladder pain, gas, diarrhea, constipation... the works.
Figuring out digestive issues is like standing in a dry, rocky river bed where all we can see is a trickle of mostly stagnant water. The digestive system should be a healthy, vibrant flowing river. My job is to hike up stream until we find the beaver dam causing all the issues down stream.
Raise your hand if you deal with digestive issues? How often do you treat the symptom with Tums, Gas-X, or Pepto, instead of asking why it's a symptom in the first place?
Hiking up stream is following the symptom to the source. Most of the time, I hike all the way up to the brain. Yep, digestion starts in the brain!
Your body operates in two states:
➡️ Sympathetic (in stress/fight or flight)
➡️ Parasympathetic (at rest)
When you're in stress, your brain will not signal the body to excrete stomach acid or digestive enzymes to breakdown your food - causing digestive issues down stream. ⬅️⬅️⬅️ THE BEAVER DAM!
So, if digestive distress is one of your main health concerns... This week • I CHALLENGE YOU • to sit down and enjoy a meal without any distractions beyond human conversation (P.S. conversing and laughing helps you digest). No phones, computers, or television, no standing or driving... Sit, take a few deep breaths and allow your body to become parasympathetic before you eat. Do this often and watch your symptoms ease.
